Bunniculfield

Choose which joke you like more:

1) There was a rabbit in this yard, and whether ironic or not, the passers-by were alerted to the pet by a "Beware Of Bunny" sign. Then a huge dog ate the bunny. Then Garfield came by, wondered where the rabbit was, and was horrified when the dog revealed his massacre by loudly belching.

2) The purple-gray Madame Mim-esque animal sitting in the yard is supposed to be a grotesquely outsized man-weight rabbit. Garfield is aghast that such a monstrosity could be called "bunny".

3) Some unfathomable conflation of #1 & #2.

To propose such a conflation, allow me to suggest that there once was a very cute bunny sitting next to that sign. Shortly before Garfield arrived, an equally cute dog entered the scene. Through a turn of events so far-fetched as to shake the reality of most Garfield comics, the bunny and the dog are melded into one. The result is an outlandishly large and gruesome looking canine-lagomorph creature. The final step in this bizarre biological process is a satisfying belch from the new creature.

There's all kinds of weird going on here. Consider:
That slovenly, uncouth dog's name is probably Bunny. Bunny, a name that (coupled with the pink sign) suggests femininity, specifically the cutesy kind. The "burp" adds another wrinkle to the joke - is "Bunny" burping because he/she just ate a small animal? Or is he/she just an impolite slob?

At any rate, I don't think that dog is meant to actually be a bunny.

That's no ordinary rabbit. That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!
The sign was too small for: the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

The essence of which is that the dog probably did Garfield a favor.

I think anonymous is probably right. It's just a dog named Bunny.

And regarding vincent's post, how awesome would it be if the next day's strip had the same hybrid creature, only now orange with black stripes? Sort of like that series where more and more people kept getting caught in Jon's window shade (anyone remember that?), only this time they're actually getting absorbed into each other's flesh.

The world is not beautiful enough for that.

I like anonymous's theory, but the "BURP" is meant to show he just ate something, and I would figure he just ate a bunny.

Something's not adding up..

On a side note, props for the Sword in the Stone reference.

I am sad that you are posting less frequently!

But I love everything you write.

Anyone who's still here, are you as disturbed as I am at this ongoing "We're BACHELORS, baby" storyline? Garfield is acting quite weird.

GET ME OUT OF THIS DOG!

I think the dog ate Stangl.

Seriously as hell: the fact that the dogs ears are a different color? Made me think it was a dog wearing bunny ears.

Re: the "We're BACHELORS, baby!" storyline... yikes!
Is this a formal acknowledgement that Liz is now gone from the strip and we're supposed to pretend that the last few months didn't happen?
Fun as it is to analyze generic "bored Garfield," "insulting Garfield," and "spider-squashing Garfield" strips, the recent Liz material actually brought back the flavor of Garfeld's 1980s golden age. I hope it's not over.

Dude! It's been a month!

Idea: how about posting the strip every day, with or without critique... then, viewers comment. Way more "web 2.0" ... and more Garfield for all of us! Let's do it up!

Re Bachelors: I think this is actually a celebration of Jon's continued dating with Liz. When single, the various events described in that week's comics are just depressing. When dating someone, though, they mean you can revel in both worlds. You doing well in romance, without someone to nag you or walk out on you for your disgusting habits. It is, in fact, the perfect time to be a messy slob; no one, not even yourself, will get on your case about it.

Holy crap, check out the 11/16 strip. I don't even know what to make of this. Where is Stangl when we need him?

Okay guys, here's the deal: I had to suddenly (literally overnight) go on a business trip, and had no access to the WWW Wide Net.

Apologies, and believe me, it bummed me out more than it bummed you out.

Regular service resumes NOW.
